We hiked back 4 miles to a beautiful lake up the valley behind our home.
Everyone carried a pack except Saul, even if it only carried toilet paper and snacks. It did leave the bulk of the gear for us. My pack (with Saul's weight) was 65 lbs. and Haakon's was 85 lbs.
When we started out it was raining lightly.
About a mile into the hike it started raining hard.
By the last mile and a half is was a monsoon with high winds that almost blew Saul and I away (with the sail up top).
The kids were crying and miserable and we wondered what we had gotten ourselves into.
Everyone was much happier after we got the tent set up and ate some dinner.
It was a rough windy rainy night but in the morning we woke up to this.
We had a very nice day hiking around, watching the birds and the clouds and even having a snowball fight. It was a peaceful, beautiful place.
The next morning was another relaxing day. After lunch we packed up and went home and of course, it rained on us almost the entire way. Somehow though, the return trip always goes faster.
We asked the kids if they would want to do that hike again and they said yes, but not for a while and not when it is cold and rainy. We will have to try doing the hike earlier in the summer next time. We love that such a beautiful place is right in our backyard!
As a side note: Our car had been parked at the trailhead and someone decided to smash almost all of the windows and damaged a decent amount of the body with rocks. Nothing was taken but it was not the best thing to come back to after a backpacking trip. We are grateful that insurance made it as good as new again.
I realized that I didn't take any pictures of the damaged car until the tow truck was hauling it away. Oh well!
